5. How to Participate:

Pre-Qualified Team Instructions:

The first place winning fraternity and sorority Teams from each REC are (and have been) invited to compete in the Championship Event. Teams must report to the designated Sprite Step Off II staging location on the day and time provided by Sprite Step Off II staff. The entire Team must be present at check-in, in order for that Team to be allowed to compete in the Championship Event, unless Team receives written approval from Sponsor for any delay or absence. Show performance times may vary and may be changed at the sole discretion of the Sprite Step Off II staff. A mandatory official Championship Event rules meeting will be held in the official Sprite Step Off II hotel on the Friday prior to the competition (i.e., May 20, 2011). Any Teams with Members who are tardy or absent are subject to sanctions, including disqualification. Sanctions will be applied via disqualification or scoring deductions to Team's Championship Event performance.

Teams will be required to participate in the Sprite Step Off II community service project on the morning of the Championship Event, which is a part of their participation in the Sprite Step Off II competition. Details regarding the service project will be provided by Sprite Step Off II staff.

Teams that have successfully completed Team Check-In will compete in the Championship Event of Sprite Step Off II. All confirmed Teams should report to their assigned stage as instructed by the Sprite Step Off II Staff. Sponsor may only allow performing Team Members and up to two (2) identified Crew members on stage. Again, the maximum number of performing steppers is 10. Anyone who steps on the stage (with the exception of identified Crew members) is considered a performing stepper and must meet the stated criteria. For purposes of clarity and avoidance of doubt, this means no children/audience members should ever be on stage with a Team during a performance. Each Team's performance must continue to meet the Performance Criteria set forth below.

Team Replacement

If, for any reason, any REC 1st Place Prize winning Team cannot accept its trip to the Championship Event, the open slot will be filled by offering the opportunity to the appropriate REC 2nd Place Prize winning Team (fraternity or sorority) from the applicable REC. If, for any reason, the 2nd Place Prize winning Team from the corresponding REC cannot accept, Sponsor will offer the opportunity to the appropriate top-scoring Team (fraternity or sorority) from among all ranked 2nd Place teams across all RECs. If the slot still cannot be filled in either of these ways, Sponsor will take whatever action it deems fair to offer the slot to another Team or the slot will go un-awarded at Sponsor's discretion.

Performance Time

Teams will have up to a maximum of 5 minutes for prop setup and strike. Each Team will be given up to 10 minutes for performance time ("Performance Time"). For purposes of clarity and avoidance of doubt, the 10 minute Performance Time starts at the Team's first clearly defined movement and/or clearly defined first sound made on the stage or screen, including any and all videos, voice introductions, introductory music and/or any other reasonable performance component(s) as determined by the NSSA Judges (as defined below) in their sole discretion. Performance Time does not stop until the final Team Member is off stage, music and/or video has stopped, and/or a clearly defined end to the Team's step show has occurred. Any Team that exceeds the 10 minute Performance Time limit may have points deducted from its score, pursuant the Judging and Deductions section below. NSSA will have a Performance Time clock clearly visible to all Teams indicating the official start and stop Performance Times. Note that any Team that exceeds the Performance Time by 61 seconds or more will be disqualified, pursuant to the Judging and Deductions section below.

Performance Conduct

Teams should ensure that their performance is suitable for viewing by people of all ages. No portion of the performance should reflect negatively upon The Coca-Cola Company or the Team's fraternity or sorority or subject them to public scandal or ridicule. • No advertising slogans or corporate logos shall appear on the clothing of Team Members.

  • No tattoos or brands may be visible during the Team's performance.

Performance Music

Again, music for Teams' performances must not be in poor taste or contain profanity or sexually explicit language or connotations. The Sprite Step Off II staff will review and approve all music and will determine, in its sole discretion, whether a Team may use its music. All music must be submitted to the Sprite Step Off II staff for review per instructions provided in the Team information package.

Each Team must have the music for its performance on a CD or an MP3 player. A Team Member must be assigned to instruct the sound person for the Team's performance. For purposes of clarity and avoidance of doubt, it is strongly suggested that all Teams provide a second copy of all CDs and MP3 player music selections, to address the possiblility of technical issues with playing the initial copy. Neither Sponsor nor the NSSA will be responsible for any technical issues associated with any Team's music not being audible at any time (i.e., music skips, breaks or inaudible moments).

Performance Props

All performance props/effects must be reviewed by Sprite Step Off II personnel. Teams are responsible for the transportation/shipping of their props to the Championship event and all associated costs. Sponsor reserves the right to reimburse Teams for such costs up to $250 per Team. Sponsor is not responsible for any loss of props or damage to props in shipping or performance. Teams must bring all props to the staging area during the Championship Event rehearsals and performances and follow all instructions that are provided in the Team information package.

6. Judging and Deductions: Performances will be judged by official representatives of the National Step Show Alliance ("NSSA") and a neutral, independent, third-party auditor (collectively, "NSSA Judges"). Each Team's performance at the Championship Event will be scored on the National Step Show Alliance 80 point scale which is divided into 2 different criteria:

Performance Elements:

  • Introduction (5 points)
  • Team Attire (10 points)
  • Theme (10 points)
  • Vocal Clarity (5 points)
  • Choreography (10 points)
  • Showmanship (10 points)
  • Outro/Exit (5 points)

Technical Elements:

  • Formations (10 points)
  • Synchronization (10 points)
  • Compulsory Steps (5 points)

Deductions (each a "Deduction"), may be assessed against a Team in the sole discretion of the NSSA Judges, for any of the following:

  Per Judge Deduction Areas Maximum

• Vulgarity/Inappropriate Actions
(5 points)
  • Inappropriate Song Selection (3 points)
  • Check Chanting/Denigrating (3 points)
  • Time Limit Infraction (5 points)
  * Note: any Team that exceeds the time limit by 61 seconds or more will be disqualified.
  One Time Deduction Areas Maximum

• Illegal Participation
(5 points)
  • Illegal Use of Prohibited Items (5 points)
  • Tardiness/Failure to Show (5 points)
  * Note: these deductions are per infraction. Multiple infractions may occur.

Deductions and Disqualification: Teams and Team Members are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and represent their organizations in a positive light. Failure to adhere to all of the restrictions in these Official Rules, by the Team or individual Team Members, before, during or after the Team's performance, may result in an additional 5-point Deduction, for each infraction, from the Team's overall score. Tardiness or failure to attend the Team Check-In and/or the Community Service project may result in an additional 5-point Deduction from the Team's overall score for each infraction or possible disqualification, at Sponsor's sole discretion.

Egregious violations of the restrictions of these Official Rules may result in immediate disqualification in the sole discretion of the NSSA Judges, The Coca Cola Company and/or Sprite Step Off II staff, whose decisions are final.

Definition and details of the above criteria can be found at http://www.spritestepoff.com/public/fulfillment/NSSA_rules.pdf.

Each NSSA Judge will score the Team's performance based on the criteria set forth above. The total score of the Team will be calculated using the above categories first, and any deductions will be subtracted to create the Team's final score. The highest and lowest NSSA Judge's score will be excluded from the final score. The NSSA Judges' composite score will then be determined based on the average of the remaining scores.

TIE BREAKER PROCEDURES

In the event of a tie between two or more Teams, the following procedures will be used to break the tie.

Stage One: Comparative analysis of the Deduction areas
  • A. Lead NSSA Judge will review the Deduction areas for each Team involved in the tie and apply rank order (best to worst) based on which Teams received no deductions (best) or the lowest amount of deductions to the Teams receiving the most deductions (worst).
  • B. Note: If this definitively breaks the tie then the winner is announced based off of Step One. If two or more Teams still remain tied then proceed to Step Two to break the tie (only Teams still tied advance).
Stage Two: Overall Standard Judge Analysis
  • A. Lead Judge will ask each Judge on the Standard Judge's Panel to cast a ballot for "one" Team out of those remaining tied.
  • B. Note: If this definitively breaks the tie then the winner is announced based off of Step Two. If two or more Teams still remain tied then proceed to Step Three to break the tie (only Teams still tied advance).
Stage Three: Lead Judge Analysis
  • A. Lead Judge will cast a ballot applying rank order to the remaining tied Teams based on their analysis of each performance.
  • B. Note: This final step will break and end any and all ties remaining.

The decisions of the NSSA Judges are final.

The fraternity Teams and the sorority Teams at the Championship Event with the highest composite scores will be deemed the potential Scholarship Prize winners.

7. SCHOLARSHIP PRIZES:

The 3 top-scoring fraternity Teams and the 3 top-scoring sorority Teams from the Championship Event will receive the following scholarship prizes (each a "Scholarship Prize"):

1st Place Prize (for the top-scoring Fraternity and Sorority) - $100,000 Team Scholarship

6. Judging and Deductions: Performances will be judged by official representatives of the National Step Show Alliance ("NSSA") and a neutral, independent, third-party auditor (collectively, "NSSA Judges"). Each Team's performance at a Regional Event Competition and the Championship Event is scored on the National Step Show Alliance 80 point scale which is divided into 2 different criteria:

Performance Elements:

  • Introduction (5 points)

  • Team Attire (10 points)

  • Theme (10 points)

  • Vocal Clarity (5 points)

  • Choreography (10 points)

  • Showmanship (10 points)

  • Outro/Exit (5 points)

Technical Elements:

  • Formations (10 points)

  • Synchronization (10 points)

  • Compulsory Steps (5 points)

Deductions (each a "Deduction), up to 11 total points, may be assessed against a Team in the sole discretion of the NSSA Judges, for any of the following:

  • Inappropriate Song Selection (3 points)

  • Check Chanting/Denigration (3 points)

  • Time Limit Infraction (5 points)

Deductions and Disqualification: Teams and Team Members are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and represent their organizations in a positive light. Failure to adhere to all of the restrictions in these Official Rules, by the Team or individual Team Members, before, during or after the Team's performance, may result in an additional 5-point Deduction, for each infraction, from the Team's overall score. Tardiness or failure to attend the Team Check-In and/or the Community Service project may result in an additional 5-point Deduction for each infraction or possible disqualification, as Sponsor's sole discretion.

The total score of the Team will be calculated using the above categories first, and any deductions will be subtracted to create the Team's final score. The highest and lowest judge's score will be excluded from the final score. The NSSA composite score will then be determined based on the average of the remaining scores.

TIE BREAKER PROCEDURES

In the event of a tie between two or more Teams, the following procedures will be used to break the tie.

Stage One: Comparative analysis of the Deduction areas

  • A. Lead judge will review the Deduction areas for each Team involved in the tie and apply rank order (best to worst) based on which Teams received no deductions (best) or the lowest amount of deductions to the Teams receiving the most deductions (worst).

  • A. Lead Judge will cast a ballot applying rank order to the remaining tied Teams based on their analysis of each performance. .

  • B. Note: This final step will break and end any and all ties remaining.

The decisions of the NSSA Judges are final.

6. Team Qualifying:

At the end of the Contest Period, a panel of eligible, qualified judges, determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion, and will judge the Submissions according to the criteria below. Judges will select Teams from each region to advance to the REC, subject to all requirements set forth in Section 7, below. All eligible Submissions will be judged on the following criteria (“Judging Criteria”):

  • Creativity of Submission – performance of new, innovative steps/moves (40%);

  • Execution – precise, rhythmic syncopation of beats (30%); and

  • Showmanship – overall manner of team's performance (30%). (Note: the 1 minute explanation providing detail on how your Chapter sparks your community/campus through service is requested, but will not be judged.)

In the event of a tie, the Team whose Submission received the highest score for Execution, as determined by the qualified judges, in their sole discretion, will be the Team that progresses to the REC. Sponsor reserves the right to select fewer Teams to progress to the RECs than expected, if, in its sole discretion, it does not receive a sufficient number of eligible and qualified Submissions. The Teams selected by Sponsor will be invited to progress to the corresponding REC and will be notified of the next steps to take if they choose to progress.

If any of the expected competition slots of the 6 RECs are not filled, Sponsor may, in its sole discretion, offer the opportunity to compete in any unfilled REC to any eligible Team or provide a walk-on opportunity for a similarly-eligible team of steppers on or around the day of the REC, based on the needs for the applicable REC.

The Team Captain of each Team invited to an REC will be required to facilitate acceptance by each of his or her Team Members and completion of all required documents and coordinate travel to the REC. Once each Team Member has completed his or her Affidavit, as required, the Team is considered to be confirmed.
